Cauliflower Benefits For Parrots
We know cauliflower is good for our Parrots, but just how good is it? Let’s take a closer look at the nutritional content.
A serving is 1 cup, or about 100 grams, of chopped cauliflower. One serving of raw or cooked cauliflower contains :
Calories | 25 |
Protein | 2g |
Carbs | 5g |
Fat | 0g |
Sugar | 2g |
Fiber | 2g |
Fiber
Cauliflower is high in fiber, this helps with your parrots digestive system as a whole. More fiber in your birds diet leads to a lesser chance of constipation. This is because foods high in fiber increase the weight and size of the stool along with softening it.
Along with this a high fiber in your parrots diet will help control it’s weight. This is because foods high in fiber are typically more satiating making your parrot feel fuller for a longer time. Meaning they will eat less.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is good for preventing blood clots, which is perfect for parrots as they can bleed a large amount from small cuts.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C plays a large role within Parrots it has many benefits like boosting immune system, lowering blood pressure, keeps the cardiovascular system in check by cleaning plaque from your birds blood vessels and keeping cholesterol from oxidizing and many other things.
However the problem? Parrots utilize a lot of vitamin C just from being alive so it’s important to feed them foods rich in vitamin C like cauliflower to counter this.
Other foods that provide an excellent source of vitamin C for your Parrot are :
- Peppers
- Kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts
- Strawberries, mango, pineapple and kiwis
How You Should Feed Cauliflower To Your Parrot
You can feed cauliflower to your parrot raw or cooked. I’d recommend to feet it uncooked as cooking it will burn away some of the quality vitamins and minerals that your originally feeding cauliflower to your parrot for.
The next best way to feed your parrot cauliflower is to steam it. This will no doubt take some of the nutrients out of it but it will still be beneficial for your parrot especially if your pet doesn’t want to eat it raw.
Are There Any Risks To Feeding Your Parrot Cauliflower?
Luckily there are no known toxins in cauliflower that are going to be a safety hazard to your parrot. There is a small risk in that there may be dirt or insects among the cauliflower this is why it’s essential to wash it before feeding it to your parrot as they may get sick.
To clean cauliflower :
- Cut cauliflower into florets
- Rinse the florettes
- Boil enough salted water to cover the cauliflower
- Get a big bowl of ice, water, and lemon juice
- Boil the cauliflower for 2 minutes then immediately move it to the ice water
- Soak for 30 minutes
- Strain out the cauliflower
